I thoroughly enjoyed my 3 weeks at Nicaragua Mia Spanish School. The professors were all caring, intelligent people who helped me better my Spanish in a comfortable, friendly atmosphere. The director, Vanesa, was very helpful and worked very hard to make sure our time their was well spent. While there, I went on the afternoon activities with the school, which included a trip to visit the isletas on Lake Nicaragua, trips to the nearby town of Masaya to visit the market and the dance/musical performance, a trip to the village of Catarina where there is a beautiful view and little market area, a trip to Laguna de Apoyo, a relaxing lake near Granada, we had an authentic Nicaragua cooking lesson, and multiple salsa and bachata dance classes taught by a professional. I also stayed with a family in Granada, and I couldn’t have asked for a nicer family. They cared for me like I was their daughter/sister and spent a lot of time talking to me, which was awesome. The kids of the family would just sit around and chat with me–the best way to learn spanish. The lessons in school were one on one and were more conversational than traditional classroom learning, which was perfect for me. (i had taken spanish in high school but was nowhere near fluent). Furthermore, the city of Granada is a gem. It is beautiful, quirky, and you will get an authentic Nicaraguan experience there. I recommend Nicaragua Mia Spanish School to anyone looking to learn Spanish in Nicaragua.

El boom del turismo en la ciudad de Granada no sólo ha hecho proliferar una serie de negocios que ofertan alternativas a esa industria, sino que también ha provocado la apertura de escuelas que enseñan el idioma español a los turistas.
La demanda y el interés de los viajantes por invertir en aprender nuestro idioma –funcional en todo su itinerario por Latinoamérica– han crecido a tal grado que a las tres tradicionales escuelas de idiomas que había en la ciudad, en pocos años se han sumado una docena.
Las escuelas ofrecen en su mayoría programas similares, a los que además de la enseñanza, le agregan eventos de turismo sociocultural.
Una experiencia
Luisana Gutiérrez, de 25 años, ha impartido clases de español en diferentes escuelas en los últimos cinco años, y hoy junto a otras cinco amigas ha decidido crear su propia academia.
Directora de la escuela “Nicaragua Mía”, Gutiérrez se bachilleró en el Colegio Teresiano de Granada con una especialidad de maestra en preescolar y primaria, experiencia que le ha ayudado a impartir sus conocimientos del idioma a sus alumnos extranjeros.
“Impartimos la enseñanza con métodos funcionales, como la mímica, con láminas y presentaciones audiovisuales; prácticas que muchas veces hacemos en contacto directo y bajo nuestra guía en lugares determinados”, explica Gutiérrez.
En ese sentido, el turismo sociocultural que las escuelas desarrollan consiste en albergar a los estudiantes en casas de familias nicaragüenses, para que de ese modo tengan contacto con la cultura de la zona.
Aprender cocinando y bailando
Lejos de ser clases con la antigua metodología dentro de cuatro paredes frente a una pizarra donde se recita la lección, las clases están llenas de dinámicas que van desde enseñar a cocinar platillos locales, hasta enseñar a bailar ritmos tropicales y danzas autóctonas.
“Soy de la idea de que es imposible aprender otra lengua en tu propio país, por eso necesitaba venir a Centroamérica por un año, para aprender lo más posible el español y poder conseguir un trabajo en el que aplique el idioma cuando vuelva a mi país”, dice Tamara Northcott, una estudiante de origen australina, quien lleva varios meses estudiando en escuelas de español de América Latina.
Estas escuelas han ampliado su mercado y han abierto otras sedes en ciudades como San Juan del Sur y León, ofreciendo paquetes denominados “transnica”, mediante el cual los estudiantes pueden continuar sus viajes y estudiar en otra sucursal de la misma escuela.
La mayoría de estos estudiantes optan por tomar una o, generalmente, dos semanas de clases en las escuelas. Hay excepciones de gente que incluso se queda por varios meses. Los paquetes que se ofertan tienen un costo que oscila entre 100 y 130 dólares por semana, dependiendo de las necesidades del estudiante, quien opta por albergarse en casas particulares.
Las temporadas altas y bajas
Las 12 escuelas de español existentes en Granada aglutinan a unos 60 profesores, en su mayoría jóvenes.
Cada escuela recibe un promedio de 350 estudiantes al año.
Pero inmersas en la dinámica de la industria del turismo de la ciudad, las mejores épocas de las escuelas están supeditadas a las afluencias de turistas, por esto hay buena temporada en el periodo de enero a marzo, y de julio a octubre.
